LA GUERRE DU SALARY CAP: Antoine Dupont Picks a Fight With the Top 14's New Money Rules, Half of the France Dressing Room Falls In Behind Him, and Gaël Fickou Quietly Refuses to Pick a Side — the Best Player on Earth Versus the Accountants, and Nobody's Blinking

REAL FACTS: French rugby's mid-2026 off-season has been dominated by a row over new Top 14 salary-cap rules, with France and Toulouse scrumhalf Antoine Dupont publicly opposing the changes and several France internationals backing him, while Racing 92 and France centre Gaël Fickou has taken a more nuanced stance on the debate. Only in France could the summer's biggest rugby drama involve zero rugby. No scrums, no scores, no last-minute drop goals — just Antoine Dupont, the best player on the planet, rolling up his sleeves and going to war with a spreadsheet. The Top 14 has brought in new salary-cap rules, and Dupont has decided he does not care for them one bit, which is a bit like the star chef deciding he does not care for the new rule about how much salt he's allowed. When the man who wins you World Player of the Year awards starts publicly frowning at your accounting, the accounting tends to make the news.

The dressing room falls in behind the little general

The thing about Dupont is that when he moves, France moves with him. Several of his international team-mates have quietly lined up behind his opposition to the new rules, because that is what happens when the most respected man in the squad plants a flag — the others come and stand next to it. It's less a rebellion and more a gravitational event: Dupont has a strong opinion, and half the France dressing room discovers it agrees with him, funnily enough, at exactly the same time.

And then there's Gaël Fickou, doing the diplomatic shuffle

Not everyone, though, is ready to grab a placard. Gaël Fickou — Racing 92 centre, France stalwart, and clearly the most politically careful man in the room — has taken a more nuanced position on the whole affair. 'Nuanced' is a beautiful word. 'Nuanced' means 'I have seen which way this argument is going and I would like to be friends with everybody when it's over.' While Dupont charges the barricade, Fickou is standing thoughtfully to one side, stroking his chin, refusing to be quoted saying anything he can't walk back at a later date. Respect the craft.

From the bottom of Africa, where our idea of a salary-cap dispute is arguing about who's buying the next round of boerewors rolls, the whole saga is magnificent theatre. The best scrumhalf alive versus the men with the calculators, an entire national squad picking teams off the pitch, and one centre expertly not picking a side at all. No ball has been kicked. No try has been scored. And it's still the most compelling contest in French rugby this month. Vive la guerre du salary cap — long may the accountants sweat.
